USE CAUTION DURING WINTER TRAVEL

PRINCE WILLIAM, VA . . . The Department of Public Works urges residents to
exercise extreme caution when driving this winter. While roads can be dangerous,
bridges and ramps can prove even more treacherous.

Bridges and ramps become icy much more quickly than roads. This is due to the
fact bridges and ramps are often made of concrete rather than asphalt. Asphalt retains
heat longer. In addition, bridges and ramps are exposed to weather on all sides and do
not have the earth to insulate underneath.

There is a wide variance between roadway and bridge surfaces. In the past, Public
Works staff have measured the temperature of the pavement on a bridge at only 17 degrees,
while asphalt pavement was still measured between 40-45 degrees.

Drivers should use extra precaution when approaching a bridge and practice safe driving.
Safe driving practices are slow down, cross bridges carefully and keep a safe distance.
These practices become all the more important on icy or slick roadways.

Snow and ice removal on most roads in Prince William County is provided by the Virginia
Department of Transportation (VDOT). Primary and emergency routes are serviced first,
then secondary roads. Call VDOT at (703) 361-2151 for more details.
